- In 2004, PalmSource, a developer of PalmOS, announced that the next version of the software would be a graphical shell over Linux kernel.
- In 2005, PalmSource sold the Palm name to PalmOne, a smartphone maker, and became part of the Japanese company Access. Therefore, the new version of the software was named ALP (Access Linux Platform).

In the same year, the company announced the suspension of PalmOS software development and the concentration of all efforts to develop the Palm webOS platform. The company also released a PalmOS emulator for webOS that allowed the use of this software.
